One Day in Grenada: The Perfect Self-Drive Itinerary

Things to Do in Grenada by car.

One day. One rental car. The whole island at your fingertips.

Whether you're a cruise ship passenger with limited time ashore or a holidaymaker wanting to make the most of a free day, a self-drive tour of Grenada is one of the best things you can do on the island. No tour guide rushing you along, no waiting for a minibus, no negotiating taxi fares at every stop.

With a rental car from Safe Wheels Auto Rentals, you can cover Grenada's most iconic sights — waterfalls, rainforests, rum distilleries, spice estates, and stunning viewpoints — all in a single, unhurried day.

Here is the perfect one-day self-drive itinerary for first-time visitors.

8:00am — Pick Up Your Car and Start in St. George's

Begin your day in the capital. St. George's is one of the most photogenic harbour towns in the entire Caribbean, with colourful Georgian buildings, a horseshoe-shaped carenage, and historic forts overlooking the sea. Park up near the waterfront and spend 30 to 45 minutes exploring on foot.

Worth seeing in St. George's:

  • Fort George — a short walk up from the harbour with panoramic views over the capital and coastline
  • The Carenage — Grenada's inner harbour, lined with fishing boats and local restaurants
  • The Market Square — especially lively on Saturday mornings with vendors selling fresh spices, fruits, and local goods

From St. George's, you'll drive north through the lush interior of the island toward the highlands.

9:30am — Grand Etang National Park

A 30-minute drive northeast of St. George's takes you up into Grenada's misty rainforest interior and the crown jewel of the island's natural landscape — Grand Etang National Park.

At the heart of the park sits Grand Etang Lake, a brilliant blue crater lake formed inside an extinct volcano. Walking trails of varying difficulty fan out from the visitor centre, from easy 15-minute strolls around the lake to more demanding hikes toward the island's peaks. Keep an eye out for the Mona monkeys that roam freely around the park entrance — they're remarkably relaxed around visitors.

The drive up to Grand Etang alone is worth it. The road winds through dense tropical forest, and on a clear morning the views back across the island are extraordinary.

Time to allow: 1 to 1.5 hours

11:00am — Concord Falls or Annandale Falls

Grenada is dotted with beautiful waterfalls tucked into its forested hillsides. Depending on your route, stop at one of these two on your way back toward the coast:

Annandale Falls is the easiest to reach — just 15 minutes from St. George's — and features a 30-foot waterfall cascading into a natural pool. It's a quick, rewarding stop and perfect for a refreshing dip.

Concord Falls in the St. John's parish is a more dramatic experience, with three separate falls including a series that require a forest hike to reach. The first fall is accessible via a paved path, while the upper falls reward those willing to walk a little further.

Time to allow: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on which you choose

12:30pm — Lunch at Gouyave and the Fish Friday Experience

Drive north along the west coast to Gouyave, Grenada's main fishing town and the heart of the island's nutmeg industry. Even outside of the famous Fish Friday street festival, Gouyave is a wonderful place to stop for lunch — fresh catch of the day, cold Carib beer, and a look at how Grenadians actually live.

If your visit happens to fall on a Friday evening, plan your entire day around ending here. Grenada comes alive during its vibrant Spicemas celebrations Enterprise Rent A Car, but Fish Friday in Gouyave is a weekly celebration that runs year-round — street food, live music, rum, and the warmth of Grenadian hospitality all in one place.

Time to allow: 1 hour for lunch

2:00pm — The Belmont Estate

Continue north to the Belmont Estate, one of Grenada's most celebrated heritage sites and a must-visit for food lovers. This 300-year-old functioning agricultural estate was established in the 17th century Mex Rent a Car and today focuses on sustainable farming — most famously organic cocoa and chocolate production.

The guided tour walks you through the full journey from cocoa pod to finished chocolate bar, including a tasting at the end. It's educational, delicious, and unlike anything else on the island.

Time to allow: 1 to 1.5 hours including lunch if you eat at their farm restaurant

3:30pm — River Antoine Rum Distillery

Just a short drive from the Belmont Estate, the River Antoine Rum Distillery is a living piece of Caribbean history. It is the oldest functioning water-powered distillery in the Caribbean RentalCarGroup, and remarkably little has changed since the 18th century. The tour is short, fascinating, and ends with a tasting of some of the strongest rum you are ever likely to encounter.

Time to allow: 45 minutes

5:00pm — Levera Beach for Sunset

End your day at Levera Beach in Grenada's remote northeast. After a full day of driving and exploring, arriving at this wild, empty stretch of coastline as the sun begins to drop is genuinely magical. The views across to the Grenadine islands of Ronde and Sugar Loaf turn golden in the late afternoon light, and the beach is almost always deserted.

There is nowhere in Grenada quite like it at sunset.

Drive time back to St. George's or Grand Anse: Approximately 50 minutes

Practical Tips for Your Self-Drive Day

  • Start early. Grenada's roads can get busy around school run and lunchtime. An 8am start gives you the best of the day.
  • Fill up before you leave. Fuel stations are easy to find around St. George's and Grand Anse, but sparse in the north.
  • Carry cash. Many local restaurants and attraction sites prefer cash payments.
  • Drive on the left. Grenada follows British road rules — take it slowly on the mountain roads until you're comfortable.
  • Book your car in advance. Especially important during peak season (December to April) and Carnival in August.
